Fake news in Korea

Deutsche Welle

Overview

South Korea will elect a new president on May 9, and 'fake news' has become a huge problem. Fabian Kretschmer reports from Seoul.

Why is this important?

There is a tendency for American audiences to frame international trends only in domestic terms. This article is useful in that it indicates that fake news is having deleterious effects on the democratic process in yet another country, South Korea, although the indications are that the South Koreans are generating much if not all of the problem themselves. The fundamental question remains: is fake news a passing phenomenon, or a result of foundational trends, in which case it’s going to become a relatively permanent, and widespread, challenge? -- BA
